The underestimated role of IR and blue light

While UV rays account for only about 5% of the total solar radiation that reaches Earth, the remaining 95% is composed largely of IR radiation. This type of radiation penetrates deeply into the skin and contributes significantly to the degradation of collagen and elastin, triggering premature aging. Similarly, blue light—emitted not only by the sun but also by electronic devices—has been shown to induce oxidative stress and pigment imbalance.

For these reasons, I&S has formulated its serums to offer full-spectrum protection. Each product in the line targets UV, IR, and blue light through a carefully selected blend of next-generation sun filters and antioxidant-rich actives. These filters are rigorously tested for both efficacy and safety, ensuring reliable defense while maintaining full ecological integrity.

SPF ratings and the sustainability paradox

The difference between SPF 30 and SPF 50+ may seem substantial, but in practice, the protection only increases from 96.7% to 98.3% — a marginal gain of less than two percentage points. Achieving this higher level of SPF, however, requires doubling the concentration of filters, many of which have known negative effects on marine life and long-term environmental sustainability.

At I&S, we advocate for a more responsible approach by standardizing on SPF 30. This level offers scientifically sound protection against UVA and UVB rays while significantly reducing the environmental burden. It is a conscious choice that aligns with both dermatological insight and ecological awareness.
