Overshoot Day is calculated by dividing the Earth's biocapacity, i.e. the amount of natural resources that the planet can regenerate in a year, by humanity's ecological footprint, which represents the demand for natural resources. The result is multiplied by 365 days, thus obtaining the precise date on which consumption exceeds the regeneration of resources.
The situation in Italy
Italy has already passed its personal Overshoot Day on May 11, 2024. If everyone lived like Italians, we would need 2.6 planets to meet global needs. Consumption patterns and waste in Italy generate a growing ecological debt, with the Earth continuing to burn more resources than it can actually renew.
