UV and UVA Rays

UV rays represent only 5% of the radiation that reaches the Earth's surface. Infrared radiation (IR) covers the rest of the spectrum. For this reason, I&S serums protect against UV rays, IR rays, and blue light. From a formulation perspective, I&S has included specific sunscreens in its serums to also counteract these wavelengths, which can induce harmful effects on the cellular structures of the epidermis..

A sunscreen with SPF 15 can absorb 93.3% of radiation. Moving up, SPF 30 absorbs 96.7% of radiation, and SPF 50+ achieves 98.3%. It is important to note that the amount of radiation absorbed from an SPF 30 to 50+ is just over one percentage point, but to achieve the latter value, the amount of filters must be doubled. This certainly has a significant impact on environmental sustainability..

It is estimated that between 10,000 and 15,000 tons of sunscreen products are released into the Mediterranean Sea each year. These considerations open the debate on the need to continue pursuing ever higher protection values, which are minimally effective in terms of the real protection conferred by different types of products. For this reason, I&S believes that formulations with SPF 30 strike the right balance between optimal skin protection and environmental consideration.

Some filters are considered harmful to the marine ecosystem, others have been identified as endocrine disruptors. The ban on the use of Benzophenone-3 and Ethylhexyl Methoxycinnamate in Hawaii has had global repercussions and has shifted consumer attention to the potential damages these filters can cause to some living organisms. Scientific studies link coral bleaching to the presence of these filters in marine waters, hence their ban in certain environmentally sensitive geographic areas. Octocrylene and Homosalate have been recognized as endocrine disruptors. For these reasons, I&S uses only the latest generation filters not implicated in these issues.

SUN PROTECTION AND ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION

To best balance environmental impact and skin protection, it is necessary to ensure maximum performance of the sunscreens, solubilizing them in the best way possible. This approach helps reduce the amount of filters needed in the formulas. This is the path chosen by I&S: to propose formulations with SPF 30 that guarantee optimal skin protection and reduce environmental impact. I&S uses naturally derived ingredients for polymers, esters, and oils; the emulsifiers are not ethoxylated.

UVA rays penetrate deeper into the epidermis, reaching the dermis where they damage molecules such as collagen, elastin, and DNA, promoting photoaging and increasing the risk of melanomas. UVA light, also known as long-wave light, accounts for about 95% of the UV light that reaches our skin. It is a real threat to our skin.

The skin damage caused by solar radiation spreads at the epidermal level through the generation of free radicals that can damage the structures of our skin (collagen, elastin, up to DNA). Therefore, the presence of an antioxidant active capable of counteracting free radicals is essential. Throughout the line, we have chosen to use packaging that allows very precise delivery of the necessary drops of product for treatment. There is no risk of accidental leakage, and the nozzle remains clean after use. Easy to carry and ergonomic.
